The Marshfield Area Catholic Schools Band Program is open to all MACS students
grades 5-12. Through the direction of twenty-one year veteran Tom Zimmerman,
the focus of the band is to teach the values of a Catholic school
through the discipline and beauty of music.
Starting at the fifth grade level, students learn the basics of counting, including
subdividing and counting in the head. They also learn all the notes and fingerings
in a one octave range and the basics of dynamics and expression.
In grade six, syncopation, sixteenth notes, triplets, and variation of meter
are introduced. New notes are introduced, where the students can play between
1 1/2 to 2 octaves. More advanced articulation concepts and expression are taught.
When the student reaches middle school, it is expected that he or she have the tools
necessary to either count everything or identify what he or she cannot
count and seek help in those areas. The student is also expected
to know all the note names and fingerings within the playable range. Dynamics and
expression are taught with the advent of Solo/Ensemble music and Solo/Ensemble
contest.
Once in high school, all the previous aspects are brought into focus as
the student is expected to know how to function as an independent musician.
The high school musician performs at a high level and performs often. Concert
Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, among others are all available at Columbus Catholic
High School.
Students in Grades 7-12 have available to them the opportunity to take an extended
trip every other year to showcase their skills. Disney World, Washington D.C.
and New York City are among the destinations.
